On my first morning my mouth ached from a tooth infection. With a good dose of antibiotics and pain killers coursing through my system I felt strong enough to wander around the side streets in Thamel without a map for a couple of hours just going where my feet and whim took me.

It had been 28 years since I was last here. Sights I'd forgotten about such as incense burning covered all manner of smells, every doorstep had a lifeless and lawless scraggy dog, there were broken and uneven paths and roadways, prayer wheels and shrines and everywhere the image of Buddha stared back at me. Along the route there were beggars, wizened old women with gold nose rings, men spitting, old fashioned bikes with handlebar bells, honking motor-bikes and bustling noisy Tuk Tuks, stores displaying singer sowing machines, dental clinics with false teeth in the window and everything for sale including beaten brass trays, full-bodied, cross-your-heart bras, bags and boots, spices and seeds, brightly woven blankets alongside bruised bananas! Weird and wonderful and chaotic life overflowing into every alley and dark corner it seemed? Welcome to Kathmandu.

Two new faces, appropriately found through Facebook, are launching Toast Martinborough 2010 today.

New Zealand’s premier wine food and music festival, Toast Martinborough innovatively used a social media search to find a guy and a girl to be its 2010 faces on posters, ads, the festival booklet, web and social media sites.

“We were delighted with the response as Facebook fans got into the spirit. We whittled photos down to a final four, and asked for comments from fans before choosing Wynne Pirini and Jenn Shelton,” said Kaylene Moore, Toast Martinborough General Manager.

Wynne is a local Wellington lad who loves to spend his weekends surfing in the Wairarapa. "Toast Martinborough is an event that I try never to miss - one year I came all the way back from Canada just to attend!” When he's not drinking good Kiwi wines, he increases internet sales for local businesses.

Jenn Shelton is a Wellington-born singer and songwriter, who was the Rugby Sevens Star in 2008 and sang for the crowd. Multi-talented, she has also worked in local theatre.

Toast Martinborough will be held on Sunday 21 November 2010. Tickets go on sale at 9am Wednesday 6 October 2010, only at 0800 TICKETEK or www.ticketek.co.nz.

NEW WAIRARAPA WINE CENTRE TO OPEN IN GREYTOWN

A new wine centre based in Greytown is set to become a cellar door for the entire Wairarapa region.

The Wairarapa Wine Centre, which will be located in the Old Library Building in Stella Bull Park, will give visitors the opportunity to taste a variety of local wines and gourmet food products, as well as the chance to meet the personalities behind them.

“The Wairarapa Wine Centre will be the cellar door for the region,” says Johner Estate winemaker Karl Johner. “This is a place where local wine makers will work together to showcase their products and give visitors the opportunity to not only sample their wines but also meet the people who create them.”

“The wine centre is also designed to increase the accessibility of northern Wairarapa growers to the public because at the moment many of these wineries do not have cellar doors.”

Scheduled to open in early September, the Wairarapa Wine Centre will specialise in the very best local wines and delicatessen style products.

A new head chef and a new menu will soon greet diners to Plate Restaurant at Holiday Inn Wellington.

Gareth Walker took up the position of Head Chef in mid July and is looking forward to enhancing New Zealand produce and flavours with contemporary international twists.

Originally from the Waikato, Gareth trained in cuisine and hospitality in Dunedin before joining the five-star Jumeriah hotel group, based in London for three years. Gareth then returned to New Zealand in 2007, working as a Head Chef and then Food and Beverage Manager.

“Through my travels I’ve had the chance to observe and be inspired by the simplicity of various cooking methods and the quality of flavours that international cooking brings to the food.”

Gareth particularly enjoys cooking Mediterranean dishes and believes this is a style and taste-range that would be popular in New Zealand. “Plate’s Chef de Cuisine Jozsef Szekely has done a brilliant job with the present menu. I’m really looking forward to working with Jozsef and the rest of the Plate team to build on that work, developing new dishes our diners will find exciting and irresistible.”

General Manager Heather Idoine-Riley says Plate Restaurant has enjoyed popularity with the same Head Chef since the 4+ Star, design award-winning Holiday Inn Wellington opened in 2007. “However, a new kitchen leader always brings a certain freshness and creativity to both the menu and the atmosphere. Hong Kong destination creating a buzz with its menu of New York-inspired rustic Italian cuisine

208 Duecento Otto is a buzzing neighbourhood restaurant and bar inspired by the New York-style Italian culinary tradition. Located on Hong Kong's art and antiquing Hollywood Road in the up-and-coming Sheung Wan district, the concept is the creation of Yenn Wong, founder of JIA Boutique Hotels.

“208 is set to be a lively new venue in Sheung Wan – an area I feel is akin to New York’s Meatpacking District in its early days with its working-class connection and heritage, and now a blooming art and design scene. To me, 208 represents the trend towards more unpretentious, comfortable dining– where tasty food, good wine and a great atmosphere blend together to create a charming and inviting neighbourhood hangout,” says Yenn.

Set in a two-storied venue, 208 Duecento Otto combines an energetic Bar downstairs with a more intimate upstairs Restaurant, both with outdoor seating that overlooks Hollywood Road. Formerly a meat storage warehouse, 208 Duecento Otto is named after its street number at 208 Hollywood Road.

Running the kitchen is Executive Chef Vinny Lauria who comes to Hong Kong from the renowned Babbo New York - consistently heralded as one of New York's favourite restaurants.

Vinny brings a New York interpretation of rustic Italian cuisine to the tables of 208 Duecento Otto. His love and passion for cooking comes from his grandfather, an Italian immigrant to the USA from Trapani, Sicily. Following in his family tradition, Vinny prepares dishes from scratch, using the freshest ingredients, practicing sustainability and not using anything pre-made. He believes that good food is about enhancing the natural flavours of the ingredients, not overruling them.

“At 208, I’ve created a menu of dishes that I love to eat frequently – rustic, traditional, tasty dishes that are made for casual relaxed modern dining,” says Vinny.

Upstairs in 208’s Restaurant, Vinny’s a la carte menu starts with a wide selection of Italian Salumi alongside unique Antipasti, such as Insalata del Testaccio – testa with warm potatoes and oregano mustard and Uovo e pomodoro – a poached Japanese egg, ‘nduja, pecorino romano, and garlic fett’unta.

Pasta dishes are fantastic as a starter, main or to share. Signatures include Bucatini al amatriciana - guanciale, charred onion, spicy tomato sauce, fresh Italian parsley, and pecorino romano, Linguini vongole with white wine, pancetta, oregano, and pepperoncini, and Spaghetti bottarga with fennel, toasted garlic, slow roasted tomatoes, and bottarga di muggine.

For Secondi, Vinny’s rustic Italian style is showcased in the Pan roasted whole mullet served with braised artichokes, charred lemon and chili “citronette”, the Dry rubbed ribeye served with crispy Prosecco potatoes, garlic anchovy aioli and the Citrus oregano marinated chicken with balsamic onions, brocolini and heirloom “salsa pomodori” – all presented on wooden cutting boards. For seafood lovers, the Saffron basil brodetto is a saffron broth with langoustines, cockles, fett’unta, and melted leek aioli.

Dolci include Bomboloni - sweet Italian fritters with currant jam and Roasted figs in saba - gorgonzola dolce, caramelized figs, and almond cookie crumble, and a wide range of quality Italian cheeses.

“Think delicious rustic dishes from a modern perspective -- and authentic Napolitana pizzas that we know you’ll love,” says Yenn. The pizzas at 208 follow in the tradition of Yenn’s award-winning Italian restaurant at JIA Shanghai, Issimo.

208’s pizzas are created by Enzo Carbone, a seasoned chef and Napolitana pizza specialist, and implemented at 208 under the watchful eye of Chef Vinny Lauria. Enzo comes from a family of trattoria owners in Naples. The pizzas are prepared to the specifications of The Association Verace Pizza Napoletana – using only buffalo mozzarella from Campana and the freshest ingredients and baked in a custom-designed pizza oven shipped in from Naples – ensuring that the aromas of Italy penetrate the venue. The signature is the D.O.C with cherry tomato, mozzarella and basil.

At the Bar, award-winning Chris Boersma, 208’s Man About the Bar has created a unique beverage direction with a dynamic menu of cocktails and wines that reflect the personality of this buzzy New York-style restaurant and bar. The dynamic list of wines complements the rustic Italian cuisine – with more than 20 wines by the glass, and a further 45 by-the-bottle. The selection tells a story of new vs. old, matching a vibrant new take on old world products, against carefully selected “will-be-classics” from the new world - a bold and refreshing cross-over.

Having specialized in cocktails at notable venues like The Lark and Café Vue, an offspring of the renowned Vue de Monde, Melbourne-born Chris backs up 208’s wine list by a 20 strong cocktail list, again adding subtle surprises. Reintroducing the Sherry Cobbler, Gibson, New York Sour, Bronx and Old-fashioned, along with coolers, fizzes and the unashamedly full-bodied 208 Manhattan, it injects a sense of class and “adult” back into drinking cocktails. “Cocktails began life as aperitifs and we try to keep that much intact. Vermouths, Bitters, Sherries, wines, small batch Bourbons, 100% Agave Tequilas, freshly squeezed juices and only imported Mexican limes, set the tone here” says Chris.

The Bar is a destination in itself for evening entertainment and casual dining; drinks are paired with a full menu of salumi, pizza, antipasti and gelati.

The interior design of 208 contrasts with the local architecture of the old building in which it is housed. In their first Asian appointment, Turkish design company Autoban has created inspired interiors. Autoban was named “Best Young Designers" by Wallpaper* in 2004 and awarded “Best Restaurant” design by the same in 2006. They are more recently known for their design of Witt Istanbul Suites, a Condé Nast Traveller Hot List hotel in 2009.

“We were inspired by the district surrounding 208, and used that and the New York-style Italian menu to create the design story within the space. Art and design play a large part in the make-up of the restaurant’s surroundings, creating a fresh Bohemian energy that we hope to have captured,” says Autoban’s Seyhan Özdemir and Sefer Çağlar.

A natural and genuine feel is imbedded in the design direction. Raw materials are featured throughout the space - steel pillars, marble table tops and solid walnut floors and ceiling. The interior walls are covered in specially designed blue and white ceramic tiles printed with Chinese illustrations. Playful and interesting Autoban furnishings add a whimsical element to the space. On the bar table, Italian words narrate the traditional recipe for Italian pizza. An interior staircase leads up to the restaurant.

“The story told throughout the restaurant gives it a unique signature style - the ceramics on the wall provide it a personal identity, and the chosen primary raw materials offer warmth and a human touch to the design,” says Seyhan and Sefer.

The 4,000 square foot space seats 52 people in the Restaurant and 32 for dining at the Bar. There is also a cosy private dining room for up to 18 people on the lower floor.

Qantas Next Generation Check-in

Qantas says it has worked closely with Australian designer Marc Newson in the design of its new Next Generation Check-in experience, which will launch in
Perth next week.

It will feature product elements including a new Qantas Frequent Flyer Card, Q Card Reader and Bag Drop facility. The Q Bag Tag, a world first, was designed exclusively for Qantas by Newson.

The new Qantas Frequent Flyer Card features an “intelligent Q” smart chip and will act as a permanent boarding pass, replacing eligible customers’ existing Frequent Flyer cards. The card will be used at various points throughout the experience, including at check-in, at bag drop, and to board the aircraft. Customers arriving at the airport who have not yet checked in online or via their mobile device, will be able to simply touch their card at an all-new Q Card Reader located throughout the check-in hall. The simple and clean design of the Q Card Reader will provide both visual and audible recognition of successful check-in.

All customers travelling with bags will be able to use the new Bag Drop service at Next Generation Check-in airports. The Bag Drop injector has been designed to ensure the Bag Drop process is simple and quick for all customers and will eliminate queuing for those travelling with bags.

Throughout the Perth trial of Next Generation Check-in, construction and training will continue in Sydney, which will be ready to launch later in 2010, followed by
Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra in 2011. The program is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2011.

Family of missing Britain abroad launch appeal on his birthday

London - The family of missing British journalist ...Michael Dixon has today launched an awareness campaign to mark his first birthday since going missing abroad. Michael, who will turn 34 on the 19th July 2010, vanished without trace after leaving his hotel while on holiday in Tamarindo, Costa Rica last October (the same town where Australian tourist, Brendan Dobbins went missing in 2005).

To mark his birthday the family has launched T-shirts featuring "Help Find Michael Dixon" with some facts about his disappearance. This t-shirt can be purchased for £12.00 on the webpage.

People buying the T-shirt are being asked to support the search by wearing the T-Shirt on Michael's birthday and sendng a picture of themselves to info@helpfindmichaeldixon.com. The campaign is supported by several celebrities including Grace Jones and Kiss FM DJ
Shortee Blitz.

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness of Michael's disappearance and to help the family fund what is now a 10-month-long effort to find out what has happened to him.The funds made from selling the T-shirt will support expenses to find Michael such as the hiring of Personal Investigators and professional search teams.

David Dixon, Michael's brother said: "We will never give up looking for Michael, but we can't do this alone. Please support us by wearing this T-shirt. By wearing the T-shirt we hope to raise awareness Michael's case and remind the world about the many people who go missing abroad without a trace. There are many families like ours who go through the pain of not knowing what happened to their brother, sister, son or daughter."

Michael Dixon, a British journalist based in Brussels, disappeared while on vacation in Costa Rica. He was reportedly last seen on October 18th leaving his hotel in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. To date there are no leads as to what may have happened to Michael, it is thought he has fallen victim of a crime.

P&O Cruises Makes a Splash on Dravuni

P&O Cruises has made a splash on Fiji’s Dravuni Island with the launch of a new landing pontoon for cruise ships.

A joint effort between P&O Cruises and local authorities, the modular pontoon was assembled by local residents and contractors over two weeks. Almost all of Dravuni’s 80 residents - including its children who were given time off school - gathered to mark the completion of the pontoon as P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel became the first ship to use the island’s new addition last month.

New Zealand based superliner Pacific Pearl - which arrives in Auckland in late December - will also use the new pontoon during the 2011 cruise season. The pontoon is important to the island’s operational needs as a tender port and also signifies P&O Cruises’ commitment to the South Pacific.

Jenny Lourey, Senior Vice President of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, said the modular pontoon was the first of its kind for the cruise line’s South Pacific ports. “It is very important to us that we work with local communities and contribute to the destinations that we visit and the pontoon is evidence of this,” Ms Lourey said. “The pontoon arrived at Dravuni like a Lego set and the local people had the task of helping to assemble it. Everyone is very proud of this new piece of equipment.”

Auckland Museum Library Throws Spotlight on Food

The Auckland Museum Library, one of the country’s most significant research libraries, is throwing its doors open in a series of food-based talks examining its rarely seen collections of menus, archives and recipe books.

The Food For Thought talks, which run for half a dozen Saturdays starting this weekend, will introduce participants to fascinating treasures all around the theme of food. The July 24 discussion - A Century of Recipe Books - is already booked out. Spaces are limited on these popular talks, so make sure you book in advance.

On Saturday August 14, Perrin Rowland will talk about her soon-to-be-published book Dining Out: A History of the Restaurant in New Zealand, based on research in the Library’s collections. Perrin will discuss what it was like to dine out in 19th and 20th century New Zealand and lead participants on a gustatory journey through the decades.

There will be tales of luxurious dining during the golden age, to the effects of licensing and the Depression years, to the rise of ethnic restaurants and the coming of age of modern New Zealand fine dining.

The talks will also examine the Library’s extensive historical research resources on the bee and the food it produces (31 July), an exploration of the Spice Islands (7 August) and an explanation of how sugar has been obtained and used in and around New Zealand (21 August). Wi-Fi a No-Go unless free

SFGate.com reports that travellers used to getting a free wireless Internet connection on land aren’t willing to pay for one at 30,000 feet.

It says wireless Internet service on airlines hasn’t caught on, mostly because of the price. Travellers already paying US$25 to check a bag and $20 for a roomier seat don’t want to fork over $5 or more for Wi-Fi unless it’s necessary. They’re
saving their Web surfing for solid ground, where “hot spots” offer the service at no charge.

Airlines have offered promotions, including some free service, to draw attention to their Wi-Fi. But experts say only about 10% of pax on Web-enabled flights have taken
advantage.

Airline technology consultant Michael Planey thinks Wi-Fi will be free as early as mid-2011, and carriers will work on ways to cover the cost, perhaps through sponsorship by big companies who would make money through advertisements.

Oculus: An Eye into St Paul’s

St Paul’s Cathedral in London this week opened a 270-degree film experience, the first project of its kind in a cathedral.

Oculus: An Eye into St Paul’s uses projection technology to immerse visitors in the stories and 1,400-year history of the cathedral. It shows visitors what Saxon London and the first St Paul’s building must have been like in AD604. The story
includes the Great Fire of London in 1666, after which the existing cathedral was built by Sir Christopher Wren. Visitors will also see London during the Blitz, when for many people St Paul’s became a symbol of strength, survival and hope.

Two virtual access films open up areas of the cathedral that visitors with mobility issues might not otherwise be able to reach. The first film flies visitors through the dome, the Whispering Gallery and the Golden Gallery with its panoramic views across the city. A second film reveals Wren’s room-sized Great Model. Four-metre high projections take visitors into the interior of the model to show it in close-up
detail.

Queens Wharf battle over

The Government and the Auckland Regional Authority have thrashed out a deal that will see the Rugby World Cup fan zone based on Queens Wharf, as originally announced by PM John Key, but his plan for a cruise ship terminal has been stymied.

Shed 11 at the harbour end of the wharf will be dismantled and removed to make way for the temporary steel, glass and PVC ‘Cloud’ structure. This will be the RWC2011 “Party Central” fan zone with festival events, industry showcasing, and international media and VIP hosting.

Shed 10, the one closest to land and on the eastern side of the wharf, is to be given a cosmetic tart-up and its ground floor will also be used as part of the fan zone. NZPA reports that passengers arriving on chartered cruise ships for the event will be processed at other ports before berthing in Auckland, obviating the need for Customs and Immigration facilities.

Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully says the intention is to leave decisions relating to the wharf’s long-term development as well as the future of Shed 10 in the appropriate hands of the new Waterfront Development Agency, which will take over from the ARC on 01NOV.

Auckland mayor John Banks says this makes it possible to stand back and take a long-term view, with the new agency delivering an integrated plan for the whole of the waterfront from Westhaven to Bledisloe.

Cunard Line Announces 2012 World Voyages

Cunard Line has announced details of its 2012 world voyages on the new Queen Elizabeth and legendary flagship Queen Mary 2, marking a 90-year legacy of annual circumnavigations.

On sale in New Zealand from Friday July 16, the new program features a 107-day journey around the globe on Queen Elizabeth and a 108-day voyage on Queen Mary 2, which will include the liner’s first circumnavigation of Australia.

Queen Elizabeth makes her way to New Zealand in February and will be in Auckland on February 20, Napier on February 21 and Wellington on February 22.

Between them, the two liners will visit 60 ports across 33 countries, with their voyages including a host of maiden visits such as Queen Mary 2’s first call to the spectacular sand dunes of Namibia’s Swakopmund.

Qantas opens international to domestic transfer facility

Qantas launched a new Sydney Domestic Transfer Facility at Sydney International Airport yesterday, allowing customers to save time when transferring from international to domestic flights.

“The new transfer facility is fifty per cent larger than the current facility and includes a new spacious check-in area, six additional check-in counters and an additional bag drop area,” Qantas Group Executive Customer and Marketing, Lesley Grant said.

Additional staff and counters will be added enabling customers to quickly transfer to connecting domestic flights, according to Ms Grant.

“An express bag drop facility will provide an even quicker transfer for customers who have their onward boarding passes and bags tagged to their final destination.”

The new facility will be open for both premium and economy passengers; each with their own check-in counters, but the purpose built facility remains at the arrivals level with Qantas advising the process for customers transferring will remain the same.

Shuttle bus services will continue to operate between the two terminals at their regular intervals.

£1 airport drop-off fee

As BAA continues with its plans to introduce a £1 drop off fee for people arriving by car at Edinburgh Airport, a Scottish MP has launched a petition and lodged a parliamentary motion against the decision.

The airport plans to introduce the fee in October this year, with construction on a new drop off zone due to start later this month. A £1 drop off fee, valid for 10 minutes, was introduced last week at Belfast airport. Drivers who want to avoid the charge can use the airport long stay car park, where “a short grace period” is granted. At Edinburgh a similar system will be put in place.

Gordon Dewar, Edinburgh Airport’s managing director, defended the decision to introduce the £1 fee, saying the money raised would be reinvested in passenger facilities. Speaking to the Scotsman, he said: “From November, every man, woman and child who travels to or from Scotland will be taxed from £12 up to £170, and none of that money is reinvested in passenger facilities. We would be happy to debate our £1 charge, every penny of which is reinvested in delivering a safe, modern airport with a diverse choice of destinations.”

Unlike most airports’ live animal facilities which are spread out over several terminals, the Animal Lounge is located in a single specialist facility building with distinct zones for export, import, transit, quarantine and health inspections ensuring that all animals transiting through Frankfurt have no chance of getting lost and are healthy enough to continue their journey.

All pets, including dogs and cats transported in the passenger cabin, are transferred to the Animal Lounge if a transfer or layover exceeds more than two to three hours. At the lounge there are thirty nine ‘small animal boxes’ that are climate-controlled and provide enough room for the animals to stretch their legs. Other live animals are transported in the climate-controlled and pressurised cargo hold.

Commenting further Kai Peters said: “The Animal Lounge facility came in particularly handy in October 2008, on a flight from Dubai to Frankfurt, when a passenger carried a pregnant dog onto the plane. About thirty minutes before the plane landed, the dog started giving birth to several puppies! A veterinarian from the Animal Lounge was called to the aircraft upon landing and the little puppies were safely delivered.”

Christchurch Airport welcomes new Wanaka flights

The announcement that Air New Zealand is increasing its flights between Wanaka and Christchurch for the winter season has been welcomed by Christchurch Airport.

“The extra flights will fill a demand in the market for people who want to greater frequency of flights from Christchurch into Wanaka, as well as trans-Tasman traffic connecting through to Wanaka,” said CIAL Chief Executive Jim Boult. “The new connection times allow Australians to connect with ease through to Wanaka. It also means Christchurch residents can have a day’s skiing in Wanaka, and be back before dinner if they want.”

Speedier arrival clearance likely in NZ

Stuff’s online Businessday service reports that passengers flying in to New Zealand
from Australia will be able to skip the baggage X-ray queue from next year.

The move could eventually see all international passengers bypassing biosecurity X-rays here. Biosecurity officials will instead be able to review Xrays taken at overseas airports before passengers board planes to New Zealand.

MAF is about to go to market for a system that will let it pre-screen X-rays of stowed baggage while pax are en route to NZ. Spokeswoman Kathy Dyer says the system
will be introduced for passengers departing Brisbane Airport in early 2011, with other Australian airports expected to join the scheme subsequently.

It will allow passengers to make a speedier exit from the airport because MAF’s
systems will recognise which bags have been pre-screened, and sniffer dogs and other tools would be used to check hand luggage.

At this stage, the system will be introduced for “low-risk trans-Tasman flights only”, but a number of international airports, including in Singapore, Hong Kong,
Vancouver and Chile, have expressed interest in the initiative.

Surf’s up (and free) in Fiji

Cdr Frank Bainimarama’s government last week ruled no-one will be able to charge surfers to access surf breaks in Fiji.

The new ruling overrides any existing arrangement and excludes any challenge in court against the cancellation of leases. The Stuff website reports the ruling has upset resort owners but thrilled surfers, who previously had to pay between US$400-$600 a day to stay at the hotels which would then allow them to ride the waves.

Previously, access to world-class waves at the best spots in Fiji, such as Cloudbreak, had been controlled by resorts that paid villages for exclusive access rights. Tavarua Island Resort, which will likely be affected by the ruling, issued a brief statement:

“The Fiji Government has always supported our surfing resort and model and conversely we’ve always supported the government and people of Fiji. If and when the details are released and the decree goes into effect, we will know at that time if it has any impact on our operation.”

Namotu Island Resort, which would also be affected by the ruling, said they had been taken by surprise and its owner is quoted as saying three villages there will be a million dollars a year worse off .

The Panasonic Avionics connectivity solution will include the eXConnect broadband service that will support Internet access, voice, data and run at speeds of up to 50Mbps; and a eXPhone GSM phone service that will enable passengers to use their mobile phones and allow the airline to restrict certain services when necessary.

A CX-branded free-of-charge entertainment portal will also be developed to include a range of content updated during the flight, access to airline and partner sites, e-commerce, airline-specific advertising and live television with pay-per-view access. This will be accessible on passenger devices and seatback screens.

The service roll out is still subject to regulatory approval.

Aucklanders to see world’s best press photos

The year’s most confronting and compelling press photos from around the globe will be shown in Auckland from August 13th as part of the World Press Photo Exhibition 2010.

This exhibition, which travels the world, showcases the winners of an international photojournalism competition. The show will be brought to the city by the Rotary Club of Auckland.

“The exhibition is unique”, says Don Bendall, President of the Rotary Club of Auckland. “It brings together moving and thought-provoking images taken around the world, by the world’s best photojournalists. We are very pleased to make this outstanding collection of photographs available to Aucklanders”.

This year’s exhibition contains 162 photographs, chosen from more than 100,000 images submitted to the competition by photojournalists, agencies, newspapers and magazines from 128 countries.

The exhibition will be on display at Smith and Caughey Queen St, on Level 6, from 13th August 2010 to 3rd of September 2010.

All proceeds from the entry fee of $5.00 will be donated to charity by the Rotary Club of Auckland.

Esplanart 2010, another one of last year’s inaugural successes is back with 10 new commissions by local visual artists. This series of temporary art installations will be situated along the southern part of Cairns Esplanade giving passers-by a wonderful visual impact and fresh enhancement of the beloved landscape. The outdoor art is joined by nearly ten exhibitions and visual art programs at Festival participants, KickArts and Cairns Regional Gallery.

The first weekend of Cairns Festival will also herald the start of a new cultural representation project, Opening Notes TNQ. Driven by Cairns Regional Council and local sponsor Cairns Penny Savings Bank, Opening Notes TNQ will welcome every baby born in the region -- 4,000 each year -- with a musical CD and booklet of north Queensland creative content, given on the day of birth at the place of birth. A partnership with dozens of local musicians, artists, and Queensland Health, this project also indicates a new community engagement ethic for the Festival.

"When I give out the first Opening Notes package to the first child born on August 20, it will contain songs and images made by people from throughout the region," said Mayor Schier, "That small gift will be a welcome from all of us, and an indication of their cultural and creative inheritance."

Music has a strong presence this year with performances by Australia’s much loved brother and sister folk duo, Angus and Julia Stone. Indigenous East Timorese artist, Ego Lemos will perform at the Tanks Art Centre while the world-renowned Australian concert pianist, David Helfgott, whose life inspired the Oscar-winning film Shine, will offer a recital at Cairns Civic Theatre.

The Civic Theatre will also present quality entertainment and family fun in the form of The Carnival of the Animals performed by local classical musicians, Paradise Concerts in partnership with Cairns Concert Orchestra and will feature internationally acclaimed soloists. The classical concert extravaganza will be narrated by Lillian Crombie, actress from epic film Australia.

Cairns Regional Council’s Festival producer Eric Holowacz said planning is well underway to throw Cairns its biggest, most dynamic Festival yet.

Dance fans can enjoy a wide range of genres from The Nutcracker performed by the Imperial Russian Ballet to Torres Strait Island dance group, Grrilla Step fronted by legendary Australian, DJ Dexter, to Stomp the Nard, the regions’ largest and most energetic dance battle showcasing at the Cairns Esplanade skate park and The Pier parking lot.

Performing arts are strongly represented in Cairns Festival’s program with The Impossible Dream celebrating its launch at the Shangri-La Hotel. The first in a series of three locally produced plays, When the wheels Fall off the World will perform at the Botanic Gardens and a beautiful song cycle by nationally acclaimed Indigenous singer Megan Sarmardin, who focuses on the strengths of family in overcoming extreme odds in Blackbird at JUTE Theatre.

Hendrix in Britain commemorates the 40th anniversary of Hendrix’s death on 18SEP70.

Visitors will be able to see his handwritten lyrics, his orange velvet jacket and Westerner hat, his scrawled travel directions to the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival
and UK concert memorabilia. In 1968, Hendrix moved into the top floor flat of 23 Brook Street in Mayfair next door to No 25, where composer George Frideric Handel
lived and worked for 36 years. He wrote his most popular music there, including Messiah, and died in the house in 1759. It is now the Handel House Museum. The flat where Hendrix lived is now used as the museum’s administrative offices but to mark the anniversary of his death it will be opened to the public for 12 days in September.

He and his team hold the record for crossing from Hong Kong to Hainan in China. He is familiar with all the oceans on the globe, on all types of boats. He lost a mast on an Open 60 after passing Cape Horn.

The third asset of the team who comes to New Caledonia to add his name to the honour board of the race is Brett Eliott. Winter festival rated ‘one of the best ever’

The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival 2010 wrapped up today (Sunday July 4) with a huge day at Coronet Peak ski area and oodles of downtown fun for littlies.

And looking back over ten fun-filled, full-on days, festival manager Simon Green declared it “one of the best ever”.

“The weather gods came to the party with tons of snow just before opening and followed that up with perfect clear blue skies and cold, crisp days,” he said. “I’d love to take the credit for that but I probably can’t!”

“What I would like to acknowledge is the sheer hard work and professionalism shown by every single member of the winter festival team and the dozens of volunteers who have freely given their time and without whom we couldn’t possibly make this community event happen.”

Up at Coronet Peak, the Budget-Rent-A-Car Mountain Bikes on Snow encompassed everything that symbolises festival -- a bunch of madcap, crazy mountain bikers with serious attitude and some seriously gnarly tyres slipping, sliding and occasionally gaining control on a specially-constructed downhill course in the snow.

Thrills, spills and a lot of laughs were the order of the day for the record field of riders. A huge spectator crowd saw Niall Renwick take out first place in the Male division while Reon Boe came in second and Jimmy Caling was third. In the Female division, mountain biker Naomi Wilson was in first place, Chrissie Sergeant second and Helen Wathng third. Junior division, Michelle Scannell was first, Dan McCombie second and Jordan Deans third. This year saw a Snow Scoot division where Chris Darby was first, Lewis Dowling second and Jason Buckley third.

Down at the Queenstown Events Centre, it was all excitement, laughter and fun as hundreds of littlies enjoyed their very own festival party at the Cookie Time Teddy Bears Picnic.

An enthusiastic bunch of over 500 mums, dads, nanas, bubs and teddy bears were entertained and enthralled. In a fairytale setting, rugs were set up and BYO picnics were the order of the day.

The big red furry Cookie Muncher was the most popular party ‘host’ in town, in constant demand for cuddles, hugs, ‘high fives’ and photo opportunities.

Youngsters listened enthralled to stories and joined in fun and games before prizes were awarded for the littlie with the most teddy bears (won by Sophie Hutchins of Queenstown with a whopping 9 in total). Prize for the best dressed little person went to the Hutchins girls with Natalie, Sophie and Anna, all dressed as Snow White.

The final wrap party for the ten-day festival was held at Coronet Peak from 4pm where the cools sounds of festival favourites Ddub rocked the deck at the Jim Beam Closing Party as night skiing began for the 2010 winter season.

“It’s been an absolute blast and I’d like to thank all the thousands of people who’ve supported us and taken part in events over the past ten days,” said a tired but elated Simon Green.

“The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter party will be back doing it all again from 24 June to 3 July next year.”

Mayhem on the Mountain

The American Express Queenstown Winter Festival took to the slopes of Coronet Peak today (Saturday July 3) to treat a huge crowd of skiers and snowboarders to an afternoon of ski area fun and crazy antics.

A perennial highlight of the grabaseat Mountain Mayhem, the Suitcase Race saw 20 foolhardy souls hurl themselves down the mountain on a range of cases as they took on the hard and fast course.

Best Dressed winner Will Oswald, dressed as ‘Scuba Steve’ declared it to be “ the best fun I have had in a long time.” Hayley Stevenson was the first female home and Nigel Lloyd won the Male category.

The title for winner of the Dash for Cash was hotly contested as a 30 strong field, made up of locals and visitors skied down the main M1 trail and ran back up the course to claim the coveted $1500.00 prize pool. Marine Prevoteaux from France was first female home, local Mark Spence first in the Masters category and Ben Ruer also from France won the Open section.

Musical Chairs saw 80 entrants, a Winterfest record, with Gabriel Hurford winning the Open section and Lucy Mortimer kept her chair to win the Children’s section.

Back downtown, the Lindauer Jazz Night (Saturday 3 July) saw the Skyline Gondola packed to capacity with a bunch of very happy festival goers dancing the night away.

Jazz and music lovers were treated to the seductive jazzy blues sounds of Vanessa Kelly on arrival, while upstairs featured the legendary LA Mitchell and the brilliant acoustics of Coast. Downstairs the dance floor was packed and pulsing to the beats of dance extraordinaire Sola Rosa and DJ Spikey Tee kept things humming along during the breaks. Eru Dangerspeil capped off a fantastic night’s entertainment.

Sunday (July 4) will see plenty of action at Coronet Peak with the Budget-Rent-A-Car Mountain Bikes on Snow followed by the Jim Beam Closing Concert featuring dDub. The on-mountain ‘wrap’ party also heralds the first night skiing session of the season.

Downtown Rail Jam under lights a hit with the crowd

The Air New Zealand Holidays Invitational Rail Jam was held in near perfect conditions at Queenstown’s Earnslaw Park tonight (Friday July 2).

Held under lights as part of the American Express Queenstown Winter Festival, the impressive Rail Jam attracted the best of New Zealand’s snowboarders and free skiers.

The 2500-strong crowd was treated to a hair-raising display of flips, jumps, tricks and grabs showcasing the incredible skill and amazing talents of 35 riders and skiers - from local up and comers through to pro riders.

Taking out first place in the Male ski section was Byron Wells, with second place going to Matt Soundy, third place to Hamish McDougal and Dhana Sherpa took fourth spot.

First place in the male snowboard category went to Mahi Mains and second place to Ben Comber. Nick Hyne took out third and Dylan Sutton came home in fourth place.

The Rail Jam finished off an extraordinary week of festival activities from the early bird dawn action of the ‘Tararua Skin to Summit’ through to the hilarity of the Canadian Club Comedy Gala.

This weekend (July 3/4) will see Coronet Peak abuzz with festival energy. Highlights include the grabaseat Mountain Mayhem on Saturday and Budget-Rent-A-Car Mountain Bikes on Snow.

The party officially ‘wraps’ on Sunday with the Jim Beam Closing Concert featuring dDub and the first night ski session of the 2010 winter season.

King Kong 360 3-D at Universal

The new King Kong 360 3-D experience opened yesterday at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Part of Universal’s enhanced studio tour, it is billed as “the largest most intense 3-D experience on the planet.”

“But,” says the LA Times reviewer, “having been-there, done-that, I can say it’s no exaggeration.” Created by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, the attraction
reportedly makes you feel as if you’re immersed in the middle of a dense jungle watching as the giant ape mixes it up with dinosaurs. “You can smell the earthy dampness, feel the wind, and, on more than one occasion, get wet when Kong knocks the spit out of a TRex,” says the reviewer.

Riding on trams, visitors wear 3-D glasses and enter a darkened sound stage, each side wall of which is covered with slightly curved, 187-foot-long, 40-foot-high movie screens. It takes 16 projectors working simultaneously to show the huge
images. Moreover, the screen images project at 60 frames per second (compared to 24 frames per second in the typical film) making for super high resolution. The tram sits on motion simulators, each car separately choreographed to the screen action taking place nearest it.

Mandarin Oriental to open Doha property

Luxury hotel group Mandarin Oriental has announced its second hotel in the Middle East, with the 160-room Doha property due to open in 2014.

The Mandarin Oriental Doha will join the group’s forthcoming hotel in Abu Dhabi and will be located within the 35-hectare Musheireb project close to Souk Waqif and the city’s business centre in West Bay.

There will be 160 rooms and suites, along with a further 95 serviced apartments, and facilities will include a spa with 10 treatment rooms, an indoor pool and a fitness centre, as well as “extensive banqueting and meeting facilities”, and “a variety of restaurants and bars”, including the group’s “cake shop” concept.

Singapore arrivals up by 30.3 % in May

Singapore welcomed 30.3 percent more visitors last month than in May 2009, or 946,000 in arrival numbers according to the latest inbound arrival statistics gathered by the Singapore Tourism Board.

How is the departure fee changing?
From 1 July 2010, travellers will no longer be required to pay an international departure fee at Christchurch Airport. Up to this date, travellers will pay the usual $25 international departure fee at Christchurch Airport before boarding their departing flight. From 1 July 2010, this fee will be included as part of the airfare costs, which means the departure fee no longer needs to be paid separately at the airport.
How much is the new Passenger Service Charge?
The new PSC is $12.50 including GST. This levy is payable for both departing and arriving travellers, and will be included as part of the airfare costs from 1 July 2010. On a return airfare, the total PSC would be $25. On a one-way airfare, the PSC would be $12.50. The policy of having no charge for children aged under 12 years will continue.
Why is Christchurch Airport doing this?
Having a PSC will bring Christchurch Airport into line with Auckland Airport and other international airports around the world, and will greatly improve the departure process for departing travellers. Feedback from travellers shows that the current departure fee collection process is a major inconvenience for them.
When do the changes take place?
For travels from 1 July 2010, a Passenger Service Charge (PSC) will be included in the costs of an airfare and collected by the airlines. From that date onwards, travellers will not have to pay a separate international departure fee at Christchurch Airport.
What does this mean for travellers?
It will significantly improve the traveller experience. It will improve the ease and simplicity of the departure process, and reduce traveller processing time through Customs. Airline travellers will have a much more streamlined departure process and therefore an improved travel experience.
What happens to those travelling either side of 1 July 2010?
There is no change for travellers leaving Christchurch before July 2010, and returning before 1 July 2010. They will pay the standard $25 PDC. However if a traveller leaves Christchurch before 1 July 2010, and returns to Christchurch after 1 July 2010, there is the potential for them to pay both the $25 departure charge, and the $12.50 PSC for their return flight as part of the airfare costs. To ensure this does not occur, all international travellers who leave Christchurch before 1 July 2010 will be asked for their return date when they pay their departure charge at the bank. Relevant travel documentation such as an itinerary will be required. If the return date is after 1 July 2010, they will only pay $12.50 departure charge, as the PSC for the return leg of their trip will be included in their return airfare costs.
However, Air New Zealand passengers who leave Christchurch before 1 July 2010, and return after 1 July 2010 will continue to pay the $25 PDC, as the PSC is not usually included in their airfare costs for the return leg of the trip. If you are an Air NZ passenger and you think you have been charged $12.50 on the return leg of the trip, you can request a refund from CIAL.

The departure of the final international passenger to pay a $25 departure fee at Christchurch Airport occurred at 3pm today, and signals the start of a new era for passengers leaving New Zealand from Christchurch.
From July1, anyone leaving New Zealand from Christchurch Airport no longer needs to pay a NZ$25 international departure fee. This is as a result of the long-awaited transition to a new departure fee collection process.
The old departure fee has been replaced by a Passenger Services Charge (PSC), consisting of $12.50 for both departing and arriving passengers, which is included in the airfare costs and collected by the airlines. No separate payment of the departure charge is necessary.
“Travellers have very clearly told us that the old departure fee process was an inconvenient extra step that did not help make an ideal final memory of New Zealand to take away with them,” said Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Jim Boult, “so we are very pleased to start a new era of simplified departure experiences for everyone.”
“Christchurch Airport is now in line with other major gateways around the world,” said Boult. “This change reduces processing time and gives travellers a much more streamlined departure. It is a continuation of our strong commitment to the New Zealand tourism industry and to the millions of passengers who travel through New Zealand’s major tourism gateway each year.”

Queenstown’s biggest and best free street party turned on the magic last night (Tues June 29) as thousands turned out to celebrate the Air New Zealand holidays Mardi Gras and were treated to a line-up of stellar entertainers.

Already interest is mounting from a wide range of potential bidders, including surfers, snowboarders, campers and trampers, backpackers, the retired, and even people keen to tour New Zealand during the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

There are two different types of camper up for auction; the Toyota Hiace 2000 Sleeper Van, which sleeps 2, and the 3-berth Toyota Dyna 2000 Deluxe Campervan. The campers are being sold by Jucy Rentals to make space for a new model they are releasing in September.

The 40 Sleeper Van models, which are expected to sell for between $13,000 and $15,000, are perfect for the surfer, tramper or backpacker as a vehicle they can bed down in overnight. They contain two bench seats and a table which convert into a double bed, as well as a stove, fridge and even a microwave and heated towel rail!

The 20 Deluxe Campervan models, expected to sell for between $35,000 and $40,000 are an extremely popular campervan for tourists wanting to explore New Zealand in style. These purpose built motor homes, designed and built in New Zealand, feature all the comforts of home including a double and single bed, kitchen, bathroom and shower, a flat screen DVD player, wardrobe and electric safe.

Alpe says these sharply priced campervans are a good entry into the motor homing world of New Zealand.

“We regularly service our campervans every 15,000kms so they have been extremely well maintained. You won’t find a campervan like these ones for a better price, they are a steal!”

The campers will be sold in two separate auctions, one in Auckland and one in Christchurch, with 30 campers in each auction. The Auckland auction will be held at Turners Auctions Penrose, Building A, corner of Leonard and Penrose Roads, Penrose, at 12.30pm Saturday, July 3. The Christchurch auction will be held at Turners Auctions, 1 Detroit Place (off Moorhouse Ave), Christchurch at 12pm Saturday, July 10. Interested parties elsewhere in the country are able to bid remotely by phone bid, or using the Turners Live online bidding system.

NEW AIR PACIFIC AUCKLAND TO SUVA SERVICE STARTS THIS WEEK

Fiji’s National carrier, Air Pacific, is making it possible for New Zealanders to fly directly from Auckland to Suva from this week, with a new service commencing on Friday (2 July).

Regional General Manager for Air Pacific in New Zealand, George Dyer, says the new jet-operated international service into Suva’s Nausori Airport offers Kiwi travellers an important alternative to Nadi.

“This service will be popular for business travel, as well as people wanting to visit friends and relatives near Suva, and for families looking for an alternative entry point into Fiji for their holiday. We’re thrilled to be able to offer this service once again after several years of flying into Nadi only,” says Mr Dyer.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Fiji Islands (CAAFI) approved the new service after Airports Fiji Limited (AFL) completed necessary work to upgrade the Suva airfield and airport to allow Air Pacific 737-700 aircraft to operate into the airport.

The Auckland-Suva service will initially resume with a weekly Friday flight, and the airline will add a second weekly flight at the same scheduled time on Mondays beginning on 2 August. The confirmed schedule will be as follows:

The new Suva service will complement Air Pacific’s existing Nadi-Auckland schedule of up to 13 weekly flights, in addition to the weekly Nadi-Christchurch flight.

Frequent flyers can also make use of a very special offer at the start of the holiday season: Between 24 June and 31 August, they will have the chance of taking their family with them into Lufthansa Business Lounges for a fee of 40 Euros (56 AUS dollars) and make their journey that much more pleasant and relaxed. The offer is valid for spouses or partners and children up the age of 18 in all Lufthansa Business Lounges in Germany and the USA.

Obese should pay double: survey

The majority of Australian travellers believe obese people should have to purchase two economy class seats when travelling on a flight, according to a Travel.com.au survey. Seven out of 10 travellers agreed that larger people should buy two seats, compared to just 53% two years ago.
