Despite traditionally being the carrier of the country's football squad, British Airways have managed to lose the role of Official Airline Supplier to the England World Cup to rival Virgin Atlantic.
Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson announced earlier this week that the England football team would fly on his airline to the World Cup in South Africa instead of British Airways.
Branson said the carrier would provide England manager Fabio Capello and his 23-man squad with their own Airbus A340-600 plane.
It will fly the team from London Heathrow to Johannesburg on 2 June in complete luxury with the longest fully flat bed in Business Class, a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system and a menu tailored specifically to the players' needs.
The squad will also get through security faster as Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class Wing at Heathrow's Terminal 3 has a private security channel.
"It is a great honour for Virgin Atlantic to be carrying the England team to Johannesburg" said Branson.
"We promise they will be looked after in style by our world-class cabin crew, so that when they arrive in Johannesburg they are fit and ready to take on the world!"
According to the Daily Mail, the football team traditionally uses British Airways planes to travel to international events.
