Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner Celebrates Ten Years

Amtrak and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) are celebrating 10 years of Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner passenger rail service in Southern and Central California which runs from San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo.

The route has experienced steady ridership growth since the inception of the newly branded service, Pacific Surfliner, in June of 2000 (formerly know as the San Diegans), averaging more than 2.5 million passengers a year. And this year also marks the celebration of the 25 millionth passenger to ride this service.

“The Pacific Surfliner route has had a tremendous impact on rail travel in California,” said William Bronte, Chief of Caltrans’ Division of Rail. “If Amtrak California provides a convenient and affordable way to travel, with quality service, people will ride. We expect continued growth and celebrations such as these in the future.”

“Ten years of great service, style and amenities are among the key reasons why millions of riders each year choose passenger rail to travel along the California coastline,” said Emmett H. Fremaux, Amtrak vice president, marketing and product management. “The success of the Pacific Surfliner is a result of Amtrak’s strong partnerships with the state of California, public agencies and the communities along its scenic route.
