Rarotonga international airport has now officially opened its new $8.5 million terminal buildings, although travellers have been using the terminals since April.
The Air New Zealand Board meeting in Rarotonga coincided with the opening and CEO Rob Fyfe, is quoted by CINews Online as saying that the airport was the standout among those that Air New Zealand operates to in the Pacific Islands.
Deputy prime minister and the minister responsible for the Airport Authority Robert
Wigmore recalled when the airport was officially opened on January 29, 1974. “The new terminals then handled just over 8000 visitors that year. At the moment our total arriving passengers are around 100,000 a year and if current trends continue we could see up to 200,000 by the year 2025.”
And to the future – Wigmore says that the second phase of the airport reconstruction
will be to duplicate the new departures building and replace the existing structure that is the arrivals lounge.
