The 2010 American Express Queenstown Winter Festival got underway with a bang tonight (Friday 25 June).
Thousands of locals and visitors made the most of the crisp clear conditions and headed down to Earnslaw Park to enjoy what can only be described as one of the best opening parties ever.
MC’s Margot Berryman and Henry Youngman got the crowd warmed up as did the 501st Legion leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of the Star Wars theme and all enjoyed lashings of mulled wine and fantastic food stalls that lined the streets.
Prime Minister the Hon Mr John Key was ably led to the Main Stage by the Imperial Guards to officially open the Festival before a spectacular fireworks display lit up the skies.
Southland sensations Pipeworkz got the party started with their unique fusion of pipes, pois and classic rock and then Queenstown’s very own Lynch Mob got the crowd grooving, performing all the hits from Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon.
Festival Director Simon Green said he was thrilled that so many people had come down to join in the celebrations.
“What a great way to declare Queenstown open for winter! It was a fantastic night. Town’s absolutely buzzing, we’ve got lots of snow and there’s a real party atmosphere.”
The Festival fun continues tomorrow (Saturday 26 June) with the colourful Oaks Hotels & Resorts Festival Parade and Family Fun Day, the Snow Sports NZ awards, and the Moulin Rouge-themed Lindauer Masquerade Ball.
Big crowds are expected at Sunday’s MoreFm Day on the Bay which is renowned for its wacky costumes and crazy antics. The action kicks off at noon with the infamous MoreFm Birdman followed by the Jetsprints, Splash for Dash and H&J’s Undy 500.
