Queenstown’s Winter Festival Celebrates 35 Year Milestone

The Southern Hemisphere’s biggest winter party is celebrating 35 years of winter fun this year with ten days of totally outrageous and uniquely Queenstown events.

From 26 June to 5 July, thousands of locals and visitors will take to Queenstown’s streets and ski slopes to welcome in the start of winter with mountain races, street parties, fireworks, live concerts, comedy, theatre, and loads of family fun, as part of the 2009 American Express Queenstown Winter Festival.

“Winter starts here”, says Festival Director Sally Feinerman who promises a programme that brings back the past, laughs at the present, has a sprinkling of glamour, a real community feel and plenty of opportunities to get in on the action.

“This is Queenstown’s official start of winter so we want everyone to get involved and party with us. We’re working to make the festival as accessible as possible with lots of free events and affordable ticket prices.” While most festivals average a seven year life span, Ms Feinerman believes the secret of the Winter Festival’s success is its ability to change with the times.

“Festival has always been, and always will be about celebrating who we are, what we are and where we are. Its roots are well and truly cemented after 34 years but we still regularly step back, reassess and continue to find new ways to engage with people.

“This year we’re working with as many local schools and community groups as possible to represent and celebrate the constantly changing diversity of Queenstown’s population.” Tickets will go on sale on 2 April on the Winter Festival website and through Ticket Direct. A promotion which runs from 2 April to 2 May will enable those quick off the mark to purchase tickets at ‘Early Bird’ prices.
