Travellers advised to exercise caution in Thailand

Tension is mounting in Thailand as violence increases and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva declaring a severe emergency situation for parts of the country.Over the weekend 21 people died and over 800 were injured as violence escalated.

The areas declared as a Severe Emergency Situation include Bangkok and neighbouring provinces. The Tourism Authority of Thailand advised all travellers to avoid areas where members of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD)/Red Shirt movement are demonstrating.

These areas include Ratchadamnoen Avenue , Makkawan Rangsan Bridge near Government House in Bangkok and Ratchaprasong intersection.

International and domestic airport terminals are operating as usual. The Australian Government labelled the area for travellers to exercise a high degree of caution if travelling.
